PRINCIPLES OF SUCCESS Series 14
PLAN STRATEGICALLY 2
Always have a list of 'what to do'. You will discover that all items in your list do not have the same importance. You will recognize this fact as you think on your list. That means you must have priorities. If you invest thought in planning and setting priorities before you begin working, you will get important things done first and get your work done faster.
Prioritize.
Each time you make a list of 'what to do' always make them in order of priority. The item at the very top of your list is the most important work. Call it your Excellent Work. Excellent Works are those that will bring you great benefits if done at the right time, and for which there will be dire consequences if not done at the right time. As a student, you Excellent Task is attending class or finishing an assignment that is due for submission.
The next item in the list is a Good Work. A Good Work is a task you should do, but it only has mild consequences; such as returning a library book or cleaning your workplace.
Fair Work follows. A Fair Work is what you can do in your spare time. It has little or no consequences at all whether you do it or not. A Fair Work include going out with friends and participating in extracurricular activities.
The rule is that you should never do a Good Work when there is an Excellent Work left undone. A Fair Work should not be done at the expense of a Good Work.
If you prioritize your work you'll be organized and get more important things done faster. Your ability to think through, analyze your work, and determine your Excellent Work allows you to become more effective at your work.
As soon as you determine your Excellent Work start working and continue to work until it is finished. Discipline yourself to follow through on your most important work and never stop until it is finished.
Plan Ahead. Planning ahead makes it easier for you to overcome procrastination, to get started, and then keep working until you finish.
Begin every year with an annual plan, what you want to achieve during the year and what you will do to achieve them.
From your annual plan, you should be able to itemize what you want to achieve monthly or weekly. You should have a weekly plan where you plan your entire week in advance. You could do this at every weekend.
You should also plan each day ahead in a daily plan. You should plan your day the night before. This helps your mind to organize the next day and generate ideas on how to get things done. Make a list of specific activities that you are going to accomplish a day ahead.
As you accomplish a task, tick it off on your list of 'what to do'. This paints a picture of accomplishment. As you work through your list you will feel more effective and powerful. You will feel in control of your life. You will be motivated to do more, and you will find it easier to get going and keep going.
