I HAVE A DREAM

PRINCIPLES OF SUCCESS Series 7

I HAVE A DREAM

One of the greatest and most influential speeches in history is one given by Martin Luther King Jr. when he declared:

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!"

Vision is a unique dream of a desired future. The movie in your mind of a better tomorrow is what we call a dream. Dream is a motion picture in the mind.

Dream precedes dominion. You must dream before you dominate. You must see you ruling before you become a ruler. Until you see yourself in dominion you cannot exercise dominion. But you can be anything if you see you becoming it.

Therefore, dream big. Your dream should be bigger than your present state, status and and station.

Dreaming is not a wish. It's working out your tomorrow in your mind. It is not day-dreaming; it's not what you wish. It's what you want, the unfolding of what you were made to become. The Creator put within you a unique vision of what you were created to become. Dream is catching a glimpse of that vision. When you discover what you were made to become, then you can declare, "I have a dream."

Your dream is as close to you as your deepest positive desire. The dream God placed within you is a strong desire to want to be somebody in life. What do you desire most in your inward being? That's your dream finding expression.

Desire is an emotion. As emotional beings, it's okay to express positive productive emotions. It's okay to be emotional about what you want. In fact, your dream should be emotionally strong enough that you always want to declare it: "I have a dream!" You want to tell somebody about it because it's a burning desire you can't keep to yourself.

The desire should be strong enough to drive you to do legitimate things in order to achieve your dream. It should be so strong it arrests your unreserved commitment. It can drive you to opportunities and resources you need in the direction of your dream. The desire would drive you to declare, "I have a dream!"

Be warned though. Your dream will attract envy. A God-given dream almost always attract envy. And it's better to be envied than to be pitied. People pity you when something is wrong with you. They envy you when something great happens to you. So, be encouraged when people envy you, when they speak against your dream. Remember: God-inspired dream will always attract envy.

Notice that people who envy other people's dreams don't have a dream they live by. They are aimless, vision-less wanderers. It seems only one out of twelve persons actually dream big and pursue their dreams.

People will rise against your dream. But if you refuse to give up on your dream, they cannot destroy it. They will only unwittingly push you to the reality of your dream. So, while dream-destroyers are killing themselves with envy, you simply follow the advice of Abraham Lincoln:

"Listen while others are talking.
Believe while others are doubting.
Decide while others are delaying.
Study while others are sleeping.
Plan while others are playing.
Begin while others are postponing.
Prepare while other are day-dreaming.
Work while others are wishing.
Smile while others are frowning.
Commend while others are criticizing.
Persist while others are quitting."
